Do you remember your first time? You know, the first time you put your toes in the squishy, wet sand, and looked out into the ocean as the thundering waves crashed around your feet.
How did you feel that first time you got to step onto the beach? Excited? Intimidated? Powerful?
I was a pasty white, freckle faced, 12-year-old kid from Pennsylvania when my toes met the ocean for the first time. Place? Daytona Beach. It was magical. At that very moment I knew one day I had to live near the beach. Flash forward a few years later and most of my family moved to Florida, grandparents and all. Some of my best beach memories are of spending long days in the ocean at Daytona Beach. I would often swing by to get Gramma on the way to the beach so she could people watch while I played in the surf.
Memories like these are the reason we make the road trip to Daytona on holiday weekends, swinging by to pick up family along the way. It’s one road trip the kids look forward to every year.
Our family trek to the beach consists of a few traditions, one of them is by kicking the day off with a freshly made Krispy Kreme and an ice-cold Longboard. Seriously, don’t knock it until you try it. No better way to watch the waves set before hitting the boards, if you ask me.
Does your family have a special place where everyone meets up for a long weekend of traditions and memory making? I’d love to know so, let’s hear it! Tell me in the comments below.
See you on the beach!
Jen
p.s. don’t forget the sunscreen!
